Description
Laverne the Ladybug
The Coccinellidae are a family of beetles, known variously as Ladybirds and Ladybugs.
When people need to use a common name, entomologists widely prefer the names Ladybird
Beetles or Lady Beetles as these insects are not true bugs. Lesser-used names
include Ladyclock, Lady Cow and Lady Fly.
Coccinellids are small insects, ranging from 1mm to 10mm and are commonly yellow, orange,
or scarlet with small black spots on their wing covers, with black legs, head and
antennae. The Coccinellidae, or Ladybugs, are generally considered useful insects,
because man species feed on aphids or scale insects, which are pests in gardens, agricultural
fields, orchards and similar places. Many Ladybugs have oval, dome-shaped bodies with six
shorts legs. Depending on the species, they can have spots, stripes or no markings at all.
Ladybugs eat aphids, which are soft bodied insects that suck the juice out of plants. If
you have roses in your garden, you have seen aphids. Aphids also come in a variety of colors
and not all Ladybugs like “all” the flavors of aphids. Ladybugs will also feed on scale
insects and plant mites. Ladybugs also are attracted to the light colored houses, especially
homes that have a clear southwestern sun exposure.
