Mallard Train – Train Series

The world speed record for a steam railway locomotive was set in England by the Mallard, which clocked 125.88 miles per hour. The Mallard never even approached 90mph in normal service though – service that saw it cover nearly 1.5 million miles before its retirement in 1963.
The record was achieved on the East Coast Line just south of Grantham. At the helm was driver Joseph Duddington, renowned for taking calculated risks. An eyewitness describes the 61-year-old Duddington turning his cap around when setting off – a gesture repeated when George Formby played a speedy driver in the film No Limit.
The driver had to worry about the locomotive’s big-end cylinder breaking due to overheating at high speed, so as a warning a “stink bomb” full of aniseed oil was attached so it would break open if the part broke. Shortly after attaining the record, the middle big end did break, so Mallard completed its run limping very slowly into Peterborough.
The record-setting Mallard, Number 4468, was restored to working order in the Eighties, and has done occasional special trips from its base today at the National Railway Museum in York.
