The Agile Scorpion:
This dangerous creature is definitely unique looking as it has mouth parts called chilicerae, a pair of
pedipalps and 4 pair of legs. It’s pedipalps, or pincers, are used primarily for prey capture and defense and
are covered with sensory hairs. The Scorpion has a very long tail, the longest being over 8 inches. This
creature is nocturnal and feeds on various insects, spiders and centipedes. The Scorpion is adapted to live
in the desert as it has extra layers of lipids or fats on their exoskeleton to minimize water loss. They tend
to mate using a “courtship dance” and are known as one of the oldest known Terrestrial Arthropods. Fossils of
these wondrous creatures date back as long as 430 million years and appear very similar to the present day
species.
