Chicken Family – Automata

MakeCNC would like to introduce you to the world of Automata.
Automata is often referred to as Mechanical Toys or Kinetic Art. Automata are
marvelous small machines that utilize most of the mechanical processes which can
be found in almost every modern machine containing cams, gears, ratchets and
cranks.
Designing and making automata is an exciting hobby. It covers a range of skills
and processes from Art, Engineering and Science, through to Craft Skills
involving card, wood and metal which can be utilized for a school project or just
for a hobby.
It is not known when exactly the first automatic machines have been produced.
Mythology has many stories about automata, some a wild and fanciful, others may
have been based on fact. We can not say for sure what is fact or fiction, so what
follows is a description of some of the more exciting reference to mythological
automata which are based on accounts from the Ancient Greeks.
The word automat is the latinization of the Greek word αὐτόματον, which means
acting of one’s own will. It is more often used to describe moving machines,
especially those that have been made to resemble human or animal actions.
Many ancient mythologies include artificial people, e.g. the mechanical servants
built by the Greek god Hephaestus (Vulcan to the Romans), the clay golems of
Jewish legends and clay giants of Norse legends, and Galatea, the mythical statue
of Pygmalion that came to life. In Greek drama, Deus Ex Machina was contrived as
a dramatic device that usually involved lowering a deity by wires into the play
to solve a seemingly impossible problem.
In modern times we now see Automata emerging as a modern art form. They can range
in price from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars depending on the complexity
and intricacy of the Automata machine.
Many modern toys now use electric motors and plastic gears to achieve the same
form as Automata but the mechanical principles behind them go back thousands of
years.
The 19th Century was a golden era for Automata. It was a time when the technique
of mass production was created to make Automata cheaper and easier to purchase
for the average child’s toy.
We would like to reflect and achieve, once more, the uniqueness and intrigue of
Automata machines here at makeCNC.
